Principality of Monaco
Arrive by sea and the Principality looks the way it was meant to be seen.
Port Hercule sits under the palace with the Rock on one side and the Larvotto beaches on the other. Coming in from the water you pass the harbour wall at the same angle the Grand Prix boats do, and the whole city stacks up in front of you.
Monaco is a short run from Beaulieu and Nice, which is why most days here are half a day on the water and half ashore. Lunch on the Larvotto, an afternoon anchored off the Japanese Garden, and back before the light goes.
During the Grand Prix and the Yacht Show the harbour is closed to visiting boats, but the water outside it is the best seat in the Principality.
Quai des États-Unis, Port Hercule. Boarding is at the pontoon rather than a desk, and the day starts the moment you step aboard.
